Wanilla Community - A pictorial history
The Church & Hall
In the 1970’s and 1980’s numbers of students reached into the 50’s. At this stage 2 classes operated in 2 buildings. During this time there were annual Sports Days with a competition between Wangary, Poonindie, and Wanilla, as well as end of year concerts and camps.
In the late 1980’s as the children in the district became older and moved on to high school, the numbers enrolled dropped progressively, until in 1990 only 13 children remained.
It was decided to close the school, and an official ceremony was held on Thursday 12th April 1990. The students were then bussed to Lake Wangary, Cummins or Port Lincoln for their primary education. The classrooms were later sold and removed from the site.
