Wanilla Community - A pictorial history
The Church & Hall
The Wanilla Rodeo was first held in 1953 and every year after that until 1963. The yards were built at the ‘Washpool” on Ron Gerschwitz property.
The rodeo yards were made by the local people using local timber. Prior to this, a rodeo was held at Dutton Bay and when it ceased operating the Wanilla Community took the opportunity to run the event. There was also a Rodeo held at Cummins during this time.
The commentator Mr Fred Hausler, called the rodeo and Mr Bruce Rowett from Marabel officiated as judge for the entire time.
The Rodeo raised money for the Community and it was used for the erection of the current hall at Wanilla.
All the animals were from local herds, bulls and steers. The horses were kept locally and came from various areas.
This rodeo attracted riders from all over Australia and was a major event in that era.
